Spectacular “Spectroscopy in a Suitcase” workshop comes to Huxlow

The University of Leicester and the Royal Society of Chemistry brought their spectacular “Spectroscopy in a Suitcase” workshop to Huxlow Science College in Irthlingborough. One sixth-form student declared it was “the best organic chemistry lesson ever!” The workshop was based on a crime scene investigation, with students running liquid samples through a spectrophotometer and finding the culprit by analysing spectra. The cost of the sophisticated equipment involved is in the tens-of-thousands, making this a very unique opportunity for post-16 students.

Students involved in the workshop were all part of The East Northamptonshire College (TENC), which combines the strengths of Huxlow Science College, The Ferrers School and Rushden Academy at post-16 level. The joint provision has the most comprehensive choice of subjects in the County, consisting of twenty nine A Levels plus ten BTEC Level 3 courses and four Level 2 post-sixteen options.
